The first day of school is quickly approaching! Are you ready? Students will begin school on Thursday, August 4, 2016! Going back to school can be a difficult process for students with special needs. Here are a few helpful things that can be done to ease anxiety of the first day of school:
- Make sure your child has visited the school and their classroom prior to the first day of school. Take advantage of Sneak Peek days! Sneak Peek days allow you and your child to visit the school and the teacher's classroom so that your child can familiarize themselves with their new environment.
- Establish a routine before the first day of school and make sure your child receives plenty of rest. If possible, ease your child into his or her "school schedule" so that they will not be tired or cranky on the first day. Establish morning and evening routines and write them down so that your child has a guide of the activities that will be taking place before and after school.
- Talk to your child and discuss any questions that they may have so that they will be more confident on the first day of school.
- Encourage your child go shopping with you to purchase school supplies so that he gets into the "spirit" of beginning school.
- Keep everyone informed! Make sure that you have discussed any concerns or questions with the teachers who will be working with your child before school starts. The more proactive you are, the better your child's teachers will be able to meet your child's needs.
